IOC television revenues up by 4.6 per cent, staff compensation packages up by 47.3 per cent

The IOC's financial report for 2024 has revealed that staff salaries and social charges increased by more than 10 times the amount that television revenue for the Olympics rose. David Owen reports

Television broadcasting rights remain the International Olympic Committee’s chief cash source. So, in Summer Olympic years, the TV revenue numbers are among the most interesting figures in the body’s financial report.

The recently-published 2024 document puts revenue from Paris at a touch over $3.251 billion. This compares with $3.107 billion generated by the heavily COVID-impacted Tokyo Games in 2021. That amounts to an increase of a moderate 4.6 per cent.

The fastest growth came from the Americas with 9.9 per cent to $1.719 billion, nearly 53 per cent of the overall pie. The comparatively tiny African market also expanded by around nine per cent to just under $19 million.
