Warning over 2036 Indian Olympic bid outweighed by potential riches of new broadcast deal
Concerns have been raised about whether India is ready but with millions of dollars to be earned in TV and sponsorship, those fears can easily be allayed by the IOC
New International Olympic Committee President Kirsty Coventry may have announced a “pause” in the bid process but India are continuing to make a strong push for 2036 and has officially confirmed for the first time that the city it plans to put forward is Ahmedabad.
Coventry announced after officially taking over from Thomas Bach last month that, having spoken to IOC members, she planned to set up a working group to examine giving them a greater voice in the process to award the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
It is understandable why Coventry wants to make sure that the system employed to pick the host for the 2036 Olympic and Paralympics is as good as it can be. Thanks to the secret deal Bach cut four years ago to hand 2032 to Brisbane without a proper bid process, these Olympics are set to be the only edition of the Summer Games to be awarded during her Presidency which she will also get to be in charge of.
